Finally! Although both T-Mobile and Microsoft said that “the revolution is coming,” actually it’s Nokia who will start it as the Finnish-based company has appointed a new CEO and President. Stephen Elop will replace Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo as CEO and President as of September 21st and the revolution will finally start.
Nokia definitely needed a new approach and the chief of Business Division at Microsoft is probably the right man to turn the Finnish company in the right direction. Although Nokia is the the most popular smartphone vendor in the world, the company is losing market share to Android phones, Apple’s iPhone, and RIM’s BlackBerry devices. Nokia will also have another competitor as of this fall as Microsoft is launching Windows Phone 7, a platform already welcomed by the general audience.
Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo has been Nokia’s CEO since June 1st, 2006 and it will remain at the company as the Chairman of Nokia Siemens Network. OPK will receive €4.6 million and 100,000 shares at Nokia.
Nokia will not ditch Symbian OS, at least this is what OPK repeatedly said. Nokia cannot abandon MeeGo OS as the platform looks nice and I’m sure that it will bring the company a lot of money. Still, I cannot help but wonder whether Microsoft’s former Business Division will bring Windows Phone 7 to Nokia. Just a wild dream, I guess…
P.S. It seems like Nokia’s last quarter earnings weren’t enough to keep OPK as CEO. Also it seems like Eldar Murtazin was right several months ago when he announced that Nokia will soon replace OPK. Oh, it’s the destiny!
